- LS Semillon (half bottle) 2002
Some of the finest Sauternes are crafted from pure Semillon - just like the luxuriously rich, golden LS from the better value vineyards of Bordeaux's Premieres Cotes. LS "shows what can be achieved when Semillon stands by itself" stated The Financial Times after triumph at a top French wine competition. Barrel-fermented for subtle oak nuances, it's now showing the benefits of a few years' bottle age. Wonderfully lush and complex with lemon curd and orange marmalade intensity. GBP 6.95 - Domaine Dupre 2003
Top-flight white Burgundy is the classic white for fine entertaining and Domaine Dupre charms connoisseurs because it offers the opulent, buttery richness of France's premier white region ... without the usual prohibitive price tag. Here Jean-Christophe Dupre insists on fermenting in fine oak barrels normally reserved for expensive Meursault. Exciting (and rare) to be able to release this at three years old, nearing gorgeous maturity. Complex aromas of vanilla toast and spicy orange citrus. Meursault-like in its rich, buttery apricot depth and long finish. GBP 9.59 - Domaine des Oliviers Chardonnay 2003
Gold medal-winning opulence like this only comes with very skillful winemaking - and a stonkingly hot vintage! Sourcing the best grapes from 2003's tiny yields down in one of the hottest parts of the Midi, the winemakers (big local characters) have used New World techniques to create a uniquely clean but ripe, concentrated Chardonnay. Fresh and dry but with all the great peach, butter and toasty flavours classic to the grape this fills the mouth and leaves it wanting more. Enjoy now, straight from the fridge or let it round off even further over the next couple of years. Vins de Pays are made throughout France but the ones making news are those from the south - where something of a wine making revolution has taken place ... attracting interest and investment from big names like Hardy's and Penfold's. GBP 6.19 - La Renardiere Chardonnay 2003
This lightly oaked Chardonnay is named after one of the parcels of vines that makes up the blend, "La Renardiere". The land in turn, takes its name from the many foxes that live wild in the area. The wine is made by the Vignerons de la Noelle, whose cellar is in Ancenis, half way between Nantes and Angers. The cellar was founded in 1952 and the wine is made by Franck David, who studied locally and has worked in both Muscadet and Sancerre - he is very much a white wine specialist. The cellar is very well equipped with the latest technology which enables them to bring out the extremely expressive aromas of fruit and white flowers. GBP 5.69 - Vespaiolo Frizzante
A refreshing 'frizz' with every mouthful! A third of the price of Champagne, Vespaiolo Frizzante is an authentic, dry, gently sparkling Italian aperitif from a multi medal-winning producer in the little village of Breganze. Hand picked grapes (when they are so ripe they attract the wasps - 'vespas' in Italian and hence the name), traditional bottling - the cork is slightly elevated, reminiscent of when they used to push them in by hand, this effervescent Italian charmer is unique and exclusive. Lightly foaming and golden in colour, with an enchanting floral bouquet and green apple flavours, this is defintiely fizz for fun and one to enjoy with friends - or poured over crushed peaches to make Venice's famous Bellini... GBP 7.65 - Chateau l'Ortolan 2004
An award-winning Sauvignon-laden gem from the cool, perfect white wine vintage in Bordeaux that filled the grapes with more zip and zing than usual. Wonderfully refreshing blend of Bordeaux's two great white grapes - Sauvignon (for grassy citrus zing) and Semillon (for added roundness). A fine aperitif or seafood partner. GBP 6.69 - Chateau Francois Brugier 2004
Between the rivers Dordogne and Garonne - and hence the name meaning 'between two seas' - the Entre-Deux-Mers has proved to be a dazzling source of extremely drinkable, excellent quality and very good value whites - if you know where to find them. Not far from the ancient walled city of Sauverterre, in the village of Romagne is the small estate of Chateau Francois Brugier which makes this classic Bordeaux white blend of Sauvignon and Semillon. The minerally, herbaceous freshness of the Sauvignon is given extra body and a richer, more rounded honeyed flavour by the Semillon, making this a perfect wine for food. And 2004 has proved an excellent vintage for whites thanks to its cooler start to the harvest, helping seal in freshness. GBP 6.99
